The three things you should know about a natural skincare regime

  • What does my skin really need?
  • What role does skincare play in overall health and wellness?
  • How does skincare affect your makeup

We asked these questions of three skincare, health and wellness professionals to help set the record straight!

What does my skin really need?

We ask Rebecca Everett, Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Nutritionist (APD)

“As a Dietitian and Nutritionist, obviously I focus more on what goes into our bodies, however, I recognise that topical skincare application onto our skin also penetrates our skin barrier and absorbs into our cells. As such, I am quite passionate about the skin care that I use and that my family uses, as well as food and supplements.

There’s a lot of gimmicks and questionable marketing claims out there, but our skin really needs antioxidants, sun protection, water and fatty acids. We should be consuming water throughout the day to keep our body hydrated (and tea or coffee to a lesser extent), and also getting it from water-dense fruit and vegetables. Vitamin C and E are considered very beneficial antioxidants, and Omega 3 and Omega 6 are probably the top two fatty acids to look for, which you can get from fish, cooking or hemp or flaxseed oils.”

What role does skincare play in overall health and wellness?

We ask Michelle Fitzgerald, Naturopath

“Your skin is the largest organ in your body and essentially mirrors to the external environment, what is happening internally. In the case of acne, your pores have likely collected oil, dead skin cells, bacteria and other impurities in the air, and this blockage can hinder the body’s natural process to produce oil to excrete up hair follicles and out through the skin. Flushed redness, dark eyes, flaky skin can all be physical signs of what lies beneath, so we need to pay attention to our bodies through what we see on the surface. Keeping skin clean and hydrated is your best defence, and because your skin absorbs the products you apply on it, you want it to be free of toxins and harsh chemicals.”

How does skincare affect your makeup?

We ask Kailee Perkins, Beautician

“Caring for your skin should never be an after-thought. You might think you are covering it up with makeup, but all you’re doing is layering onto it, so you want that first layer of skin to be clean and smooth. Nourish it externally just as you nourish your body internally.

Ensuring you have clean well nourished skin is the answer to a flawless makeup application. Applying makeup up to dirty dry skin can cause more harm than good, by locking in dirt and pollutants. With regular skincare and exfoliating this will ensure the health of your skin for a better completion and all over skin tone. If the skin is well hydrated and clean with non-oily products, there is no reason for the makeup to not last throughout the day, so skip the primer and focus on protecting and nourishing your skin instead. Skin is what makes us.”

The experts agree that a natural, clean beauty product is best for your skin. A great place to start looking after your skin head to toe is with our Flawless Face and Body Combo! Packed with antioxidants, caffeine and Vitamin E, your skin will thank you.
